Khaya HealthTech scoops SAB Foundation award
We are proud to share that Joel Philpott, CEO of Khaya HealthTech, was awarded 4th in the disability empowerment category with a cash prize of R450 000 during the SAB Foundation Award ceremony that was held on 14 October 2025.
The SAB Foundation annually recognises South African innovators through its Social Innovation and Disability Empowerment Awards, supporting entrepreneurs who are driving meaningful social change.
Joel, a UCT innovator and founder of spin-off company Khaya HealthTech, entered INSPYRE, a pioneering device addressing sleep disorders that disproportionately affect people with disabilities.
INSPYRE is a significant step forward in accessible healthcare. It integrates both diagnostic and treatment functionality in one portable unit, allowing patients to complete the entire process from home rather than making multiple hospital visits. The diagnostic component tracks breathing effort, oxygen levels, and airflow. Once parameters are established, the treatment component delivers precisely calibrated air pressure tailored to the patient’s needs.
Dr Andrew Bailey, Director of UCT Research Contracts and Innovation (RC&I), shares in the congratulations and says, “We’re delighted to see innovations like INSPYRE making an impact and advancing inclusive health technology.”
The SAB Foundation is an independent trust that invests millions of rands annually to foster entrepreneurship and social innovation in South Africa, improving lives and empowering communities.
INSPYRE is a patent pending medical device developed at UCT MedTech, supported by UCT RC&I.
